Definition of Business Alignment
Corporate: Linking of organizational goals with the employees' personal goals. Requires common understanding of purposes and goals of the organization, and consistency between every objective and plan right down to the incentive offers.

Are Management's Compensation Plans Aligned with Shareholder Interest?

It has become common at public companies to describe most compensation plans as aligning the interests of management with those of shareholders. In our book, where alignment means being a partner in both directions, not just on the upside. Many of these "alignment" plans fail this basic test, being artful forms of "heads I win, tails you lose." A typical form of misalignment occurs in the typical stock option arrangements, in which it does not periodically increase the option price to compensate for the fact that their retained earnings are building up the wealth of the company. Indeed, the combination of for instance a ten-year option, a low dividend payout, and compound interest can provide really lush gains to a manager who has done no more than tread water in his job. A cynic might even cry that when payments to owners are held down, the profit to the option-holding manager usually increase. I have yet to see this critical point spelled out in the proxy statement asking the shareholders to approve an option plan.

Strategic Alignment is related to the concept of strategic fit, where strategic fit is defined as internal consistency of the activities that implement the differentiating components of a strategy. Strategic fit exists when the network of internal performance drivers is consistent and aligned with the firm's desired customer and financial outcomes. The authors add that achieving alignment is an explicit part of the management process.
